Aren't we all thankful for this beautiful planet we get to live in every day? We rise every day to the bright sunlight, watch trees swaying in the wind, listen to the chirping of birds as they fly in the sky. It is important to step back and appreciate all that nature gives us and it is crucial that we start building this appreciation as early as possible in life.

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year. It is a day that reminds us to respect the Earth and show gratitude towards Mother Nature. Celebrating Earth Day gives us the opportunity to spread awareness about protecting our planet and teach our children how to do the same.

We at Kutuki want to celebrate Earth Week by sharing a range of Earth Day themed crafts for preschoolers and toddlers that are fun, meaningful while connecting them to planet Earth.

TISSUE PAPER EARTH CRAFT

Preparation Time: 15 minutes.

This is an incredibly fun, Earth Day craft for preschoolers and toddlers. The materials you would require for this Earth Day Craft will include

1. White Paper
2. Blue Tissue Paper
3. Green Tissue Paper
4. Child Safety Scissors (under supervision)
5. Glue/ Fevicol.

Here's how you can get started with the activity. First, help your child cut out a circle from the white paper. You could either cut out a circle for them or draw a circle on white paper and supervise them when they cut the shape. Next, you can have your little one tear the blue and green coloured tissue paper in different sizes. We're sure your little one would love this part of the activity. Ask them to tear the coloured paper into different sizes and keep them aside. Then use the glue stick and apply glue all over the white paper circle and stick your blue and green tissue paper pieces onto it. Here, the blue depicts water and the green for land. You can draw a little outline to represent the blue and green parts of the Earth. You can also let them apply the tissue paper wherever they want by showing them a picture of the Earth. Once it's dry, your Earth Day craft is ready for display! This easy Earth Day activity is a fun way to talk to your child about the continents, planets and make them feel proud of their creation.

EARTH IN A BOTTLE

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

This is another fun and easy Earth Day activity. These Earth Day Discovery Bottles are the perfect companion for your preschoolers and toddlers. This activity is easy to make and serves as a great sensory tool for little ones. You would have to prepare ahead of time to do this activity with your little ones. You will need a set of transparent water bottles which are small in size. Here's how you should get started with this activity;

Bottle 1: The Land Bottle

We will try to recreate the land aspect of the Earth. All you have to do is ask your child to collect items that we find on land like sand, small pieces of rocks or pebbles, shells, grass, leaves or any dried flowers. Once you've collected all the things that we find on land, it's time to fill the bottle.

Bottle 2: The Ocean Bottle

With this bottle, we will try to make a mini ocean inside the bottle. You can start by filling water in the bottle halfway and put in two drops of blue food colouring to make it blue like the ocean. To make it look more realistic, you can add some marbles and glitter too. Shake, shake, shake your ocean in a bottle is ready.

Once these bottles are ready, you can leave them for display on the table or your shelf for a week or two. These Earth Day discovery bottles will help you start conversations about the elements of Earth, environment and the world around us.

SELF-PORTRAIT WITH NATURE

This is another fantastic Earth Day activity for toddlers and preschoolers. It requires minimal preparation and the materials cost you almost nothing. All you need is oval-shaped cardboards and a little bag to collect all your materials and glue. Take a walk around your neighbourhood or to your mini garden at home and pick up some interesting natural items like leaves of different sizes, dried flowers, buds, grass or anything that would look great on your self-portrait. Once you have collected all your treasures, get back to your desk, grab the oval-shaped cardboard and some glue and use the materials you took from your garden and construct your face on the cardboard.To help the little ones figure out where to stick the flowers and leaves, you can lightly mark the features on the cardboard with a pencil. This will help them to paste the objects in the right place and create a self-portrait.
